Surface treatment systems for industrial odour control
Surface treatment systems are used to control odour contaminated surfaces at wastewater and solid waste sites. CleanaWater solutions are suited to a large range of industrial and commercial use cases, such as leachate lagoons, waste stockpiles, and odorous surfaces where diffuse odour cannot be captured. Our solutions are engineered to neutralise odour compounds and maintain operational performance across commercial and industrial applications. Our solutions also support the naturally occurring good bacteria, enabling them to outcompete bad bacteria with odorous anaerobic decomposition pathways, resulting in ongoing odour reduction.

-
Limits the production of future odorous by-products during decomposition
Applications of surface odour control
Surface treatment is best used when odour originates from exposed wastewater or trade waste surfaces and cannot be captured, or when periodic odour breakouts can occur and need instant treatments to prevent odour complaints and potential EPA intervention. Any Council or EPA regulated site with the potential to generate odour spikes that could be generated from the site, or sites with wastes with longer resident time that need to be ongoingly managed.
A surface-based solution is required to ensure you continue to meet environmental legislation requirements, and are able to come back into compliance if unexpected odours occur that push you outside of allowable limits
-
Existing equipment cannot capture or contain current odours
-
A reliable solution is needed to protect site operations and customers
-
A tailored solution is required for complex industrial environments
How our end-to-end surface treatment systems work
Surface treatment systems control odour by applying specialised neutralising solutions directly to contaminated surfaces. This approach targets odour at its source and delivers consistent results on problematic odour sources.
Odour source
Odour typically originates from exposed wastewater, sludge, or organic residues on hard surfaces. These conditions are common in lagoons, wash areas, and solid waste infrastructure, where biological activity produces odorous gases such as hydrogen sulphide and volatile organic compounds.
Common sources include:
-
Wastewater lagoons, leachate ponds and wastewater storage areas
-
Solid waste and organic build-up on surfaces
Treatment mechanism
Surface treatment systems use high-quality odour neutralising chemistry designed to penetrate surface contamination and disrupt odour-producing biological processes. When applied, active components break down grease, organic soils, and microbial activity responsible for odour generation.
CleanaWater specifies innovative treatment solutions that focus on odour neutralisation rather than water disinfection. Systems are engineered to ensure durability, consistent application, and reliable operation across industrial sites.
Neutralisation / capture point
Neutralisation occurs directly at the surface where odour is generated, rather than within captured airflow or enclosed systems. Treatment solutions are sprayed or foamed onto targeted areas, allowing active agents to contact and neutralise odour compounds immediately.
This method is particularly effective where odour is diffuse, surfaces are heavily soiled, or capture-based systems are not practical due to site layout or operational challenges.
Where measurement occurs
Performance is typically measured through reduced odour complaints, improved site conditions, and ongoing compliance with council and regulatory requirements. We can also assist in doing testing on your site, whether that be olfactory/odour testing, gas sampling or water sampling to confirm that the solutions have reduced your odours to a complaint level. CleanaWater works with each client to define relevant success indicators based on site conditions, sector obligations, and operational priorities.
As a trusted partner, CleanaWater provides professional guidance, ongoing service support, and system optimisation to ensure treatment outcomes remain consistent over time.

Proven outcomes across wastewater and trade waste sites
Surface treatment delivers reliable odour reduction, improved site conditions, and consistent operational performance across wastewater and trade waste sites.
What sites notice first
Effective surface treatment delivers fast odour relief and more stable site conditions. Operators receive fewer odour complaints, improved work environments, and easier day-to-day site management. Application is easy and immediately effective, it the vast majority of cases able to bring the site back into compliance where it would otherwise be breaching environmental odour limits.
Expected performance over time
1-3 months
Notably starts increasing the ongoing reduction in odours, even if dosages are missed, and the contact deodoriser were to wears off, starting to become significantly better months.
The ecosystem inside the odorous source is now established, and the additive dosage can be reduced to maintenance levels; significant ongoing reductions in odours have occurred, and most people find that odours have been resolved completely.
0-1 month
Initial treatment typically delivers noticeable odour reduction soon after application, with early improvements reflected in site conditions.
How outcomes are assessed
Surface treatment success is usually measured through practical indicators rather than single metrics. These include reduced odour complaints, improved site usability, and alignment with council and regulatory expectations. However, gas monitoring or samples of the odorous material will also confirm improved health and lower contamination levels. CleanaWater works with each client to define relevant measures based on site conditions, operational priorities, and legal requirements.

Odour control solutions aligned with compliance regulations
CleanaWater surface treatment systems are engineered to support odour control obligations and align with council and EPA expectations across Australian sites.
Complementary odour control systems
Surface treatment can be integrated with targeted carbon capture systems that directly extract odorous gases from individual emission sources. It can also be paired with broader diffuse odour management solutions, such as VapourGard, to address widespread emissions across wastewater and trade waste infrastructure.
Misting Systems
Misting systems apply a fine spray of odour treatment solution near the source, supporting neutralisation of airborne odour compounds before they disperse and impact offsite receivers such as residents or neighbouring businesses.
Vapour Systems
Vapour systems are designed for large, open or hard-to-capture odour sources. They treat airborne odours at the site boundary, making them suitable where extraction or enclosed treatment is not practical. The vapourised solution travels with the contaminants off-site, to continue to treat odours even after they have passed the site boundary.
